, new hampshire is mitt romney's final stop before election day. director of the marist poll joins me now. lee, let's start with iowa, as you might be already aware of. the romney campaign disputes the size of the lead that we have for the president there. they believe this race is a dead heat. you look inside these numbers, what can you tell me about what is giving the president what it appears to be a solid lead, according to our survey? >> several things. mitt romney's favorable, unfavorable is still upside down in iowa, not in new hampshire, not in wisconsin. iowa is maintaining that pattern that we've seen a lot this fall. it hasn't moved for him. iowa is a huge early voting state and i think if the story of this election ends up being the re-election if it does of president obama, it's going to be all about the early voting and the wider his lead, the wider the state -- the more early voting. >> let me throw up a stat from our iowa poll for folks. among those who say they have voted or will vote early, and mitt romney leads 55/35. so, you know, that is -- that points to the adva

tuesday, next day. keep in mind, this is all subject to change but for now, mitt romney planning to visit ohio, wisconsin, new hampshire, iowa and colorado. nothing scheduled in florida yet. but we are still awaiting clarity on the plans for sunday. as for the president, president obama has rallies planned between now and election day in ohio, wisconsin, iowa, virginia, new hampshire, florida and colorado. gloria borger is our chief political analyst. i'm out of breath running through the different states he'll be visiting. what do the maps tell you and things could change. what do you make of the fact romney won't be heading to florida? >> well, on the florida point, i was on the conference call with a few of his top advisers yesterday and they say they feel good about florida and a thing to look at and say, well, if he doesn't go back there and don't forget he was there just yesterday, he was there over the weekend and if he doesn't go back there, that may show a sense of optimism on the side of the romney camp. don't forget, they need florida just like they need ohio if they win this e

last few days, this idea that mitt romney is the change candidate. this is a change election. they say the path to victory for governor romney, it's to focus on the people who are unsatisfied with president obama's leadership and say we can bring the change, big change, bold change. he actually used the word "big change" 12 times in a speech the other day. they're trying to hammer this message home to serve many who might be disaffected by the president. hopefully turn some of these blue states like virginia back into the republican column. >> and obviously we know the importance of virginia. he's spending the entire day there. that's an interesting strategy. we know he's going to hopscotch as well, and i believe the big rally is friday, right, garrett, in ohio, but nevertheless, the entire day in virginia. >> well, a little bit of what you're seeing today in virginia is makeup events after hurricane sandy. the final event tonight will be virginia beach. that was an event they had to scrap as the storm was approaching. i think they'd rather not have to spend an entire day in virginia b

at this point for romney suddenly getting that extra push over the last four, five days of this race and winning next tuesday? what's the strongest argument you've heard? >> well, i don't think there is a good argument for him getting a kind of issue push, a kind of free media narrative push. i think at this point, it's that the turnout assumptions that a lot of pollsters are making are wrong. and that republican -- optimistic republican projections about what the electorate are going to look like are more accurate than pollsters who are saying there will be a solid african-american vote, latino vote, different members of the coalition which might not be at 2008 levels but get him where he needs to be, and estimating what the republican turnout will be. that has to be the reality on election day for mitt romney to win. maybe without the storm, if romney had been able to drive some of the stories, i would mention i think this benghazi story got a little bit serious. there's new reporting, new documents have been found in that compound that don't look great for the administration, but
